SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

In the Summer of 1993 we went by coach to Lido di Jesolo, with a view to using it as a base for visiting Venice. For that reason it was a good idea. For any other reason it was most definitely not. The journey out and home was a catalogue of mismanagement and gross inefficiency. However, on the credit side the American Hotel in Lido di Jesolo was comfortable and acceptable, but almost nothing else in Lido di Jesolo could be so described. Hence the following:

SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI
(And any other day, come to that)

I never knew life could be slow
Until we came to Jesolo
Where every hour seems to be
A foretaste of eternity.
I check my watch. It's three-fifteen.
What have we done ? Where have we been ?
An hour passes. Mercy me !
The time is now three twenty-three.
(A living proof, this seems to be
Of Einstein's Relativity).
The planet on its daily course
Turns with a slow remorseless force;
But nowhere does it turn as slow
As here in bloody Jesolo.

Still, Venice was, as always, Venice, and fully compensated for Jesolo.
